Yesterday, I started writing for IT Knowledge Exchange. The topic? You guessed it, development best practices.
Here’s the formal introduction to what I’ll be writing about:
Taming the Wild Wild Web will focus on the importance of developing sites by keeping Web standards in mind. Great attention will be paid to front-end coding practices using advanced XHTML and CSS. Learn to create effective user experiences by utilizing progressive enhancements with Javascript and how to implement and integrate back-end code to simplify and demystify the abstractions laid over the Internet. The relative importance of utilizing Web standards to promote search engine optimization, accessibility and usability will also be covered in great detail.

Even though Matt Cutts, Google’s talking head for “playing by the rules”, discussed URL canonicalization issues back in the early part of 2006, it bothers me how much subpar information about .htaccess is published on the Internet by search marketers under the guise of “simple ways to normalize your domain.”
I personally find tutorials like that thoroughly inadequate and ultimately frustrating, and usually when I’m about halfway through, I get the feeling that people like this know not a hole in the ground from a hole in their ass.
